| CG Engineering provided the structural design and construction drawings for a four building retail center. The usable floor area for the four buildings is approximately 12,000 square feet, 16,500 square feet, 5,500 square feet, and 5,500 square feet, for a total of 39,500 square feet. The retail buildings have plywood shear walls, as well as conventional hold-downs, at points around the perimeter to serve as lateral resistance to wind and seismic forces. To maximize open space, long span open web wood trusses spanning between steel beams were used to frame the roof. Steel columns were designed to support the large steel beams. Several different types of canopies were designed and detailed at store front locations for all of the buildings. Three of the four buildings have foundations which consists of conventional concrete spread footings under the bearing points and slabs-on-grade at the interior. The fourth building was in an area of soft soil which was unsuitable for a conventional foundation. This building was supported around the perimeter by grade beams and 4 inch diameter pipe piles. The interior slab was designed as a 6 inch two-way structural slab with pile caps and 4 inch diameter piles. The piles extend approximately 45 feet into the ground as recommended by the geotechnical engineer. |
