QWEST TUKWILA MECHANICAL UPGRADE
Tukwila, WA

CG Engineering was retained to perform structural feasibility for upgrading HVAC and power systems at the telecommunications facility. The existing seismic force resisting system was determined to require upgrades because a previous mechanical platform was added several years earlier which brought the system to capacity. Because of the cost implications for upgrading the concrete shear wall system with deep foundations, it was decided to locate the four 20,000 lb cooling towers atop an independent steel frame that extended through the existing roof framing. A combination of moment and braced steel frames were utilized to reduce the impact on the roof framing and floor space below. Steel frames were also added to support (72) conduit across the electrical and mechanical equipment. Full height CMU walls were provided as a fire and sound barrier and existing concrete walls were modified for new openings and an awning.
